Selby or Captive of the Labyrinth: Sarah L. Winchester and Her Mysterious Mansion by Lisa L. For a better understanding of this lady you might do a quick read of The Inscrutable Mrs. It is well worth your afternoon or morning. I guess it takes a lot of money for upkeep on such a large house and grounds. I wish we had been able to also take the Behind the Scenes Tour, but the ticket prices were a little steep (They do have Seniors' tickets.). There were some logical reasons for some of the unique features of the house, and for others there weren't. It definitely gave us a real world perspective to what we already knew and heard about the house. Again, we are very glad that we had the opportunity to visit the Mystery House. We did find a shady spot on a bench out in the courtyard that wasn't to unbearable. Unfortunately, we could not find a place to sit as there were apparently some prospective employees who were rehearsing for tour guide auditions and sitting at many of the tables usually reserved for customers. After our tour we decided to get some refreshments in the cafe that is attached to the gift shop area. They are very well maintained and worth the time to explore. In the welcome center/gift shop is where visitors purchase tickets for the tours and there are two tours available. It was not so warm as to make it too uncomfortable though. It turned out that the welcome center was but the remainder of the house was not. We were hoping that due to the heat of the day that the house was air conditioned. Upon arriving at the attraction we both remarked at how large the estate is. We figured that it was probably something that would would never have the chance to see.
